7 & 8 Music Video Lesson 1

Education

Lesson 1 (100 minutes) - An Orientation to Music Videos

The Hook - Play around Visualisation

As an introduction to this learning sequence, students are asked to close their eyes and listen to music pieces played to the class. Students are prompted to let their imaginations run wild and observe what visualisations occur to them as the music plays. A class wide dialogue is established where students are encouraged to share their thoughts. The teacher will prompt, "What are the qualities of music which may have incited this?"

An Introduction to the Music Video

As a class, students will now watch a series of music videos. Following this the teacher will open the class to discussion. Let's unpack some of the stylistic methods used.

The teacher will intentionally include music videos created by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. These works will be introduced with appropriate context, guiding students to consider how storytelling, identity, and connection to Country are communicated through visual and musical elements. Students will be encouraged to reflect on the cultural perspectives shared within these music videos.

The teacher will facilitate discussion using prompts such as: What stories are being told? How are symbols, landscape, and people represented? Students will be guided to recognise that these media artworks are grounded in rich and ongoing cultural traditions, and should be engaged with respectfully.
