7 & 8 Music Video Lesson 1

Education

Lesson 1 (100 minutes) - An Orientation to Music Videos

The Hook - Play around Visualisation

As an introduction to this learning sequence, students are asked to close their eyes and listen to music pieces played to the class. Students are prompted to let their imaginations run wild and observe what visualisations or feelings occur to them as the music plays. Any and all internalisations are encouraged. A class wide dialogue is established where students are encouraged to share their thoughts. The teacher will prompt students to consider why such visualisations came to them; what are the qualities of music which may have incited this?

* If the students are enjoying this exercise, the teacher may wish to play the students a music video with the audio muted. What type of music do the students expect to hear when unmuted?

This will progress us to exploration of the music video genre.

An Introduction to the Music Video

As a class, students will now watch a series of music videos. Following the screenings the teacher will again open the class to discussion. How do the visuals fit the tone created by the music with its tonality and lyrics? Here the teacher will take the opportunity to include music videos created by Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artists.
